The Smith residence in Rick and Morty serves as the main hub for the family's chaotic adventures, hiding extraordinary secrets beneath a traditional suburban exterior. Located outside Seattle, Washington, the house appears completely normal at first glance, but its architecture is filled with sci-fi modifications. Exploring the interior layout reveals how the living spaces reflect each character's personality and highlight the constant invasion of cosmic absurdity into suburban life.
The Main Floor and Family Living Spaces
The Ground level includes the standard entry room, living area, kitchen, and dining room where the family gathers. These spaces showcase domestic suburban life, creating a stark contrast with the sci-fi chaos that constantly erupts around them. Subtle structural choices keep the living areas feeling grounded while maintaining consistent continuity throughout the series.
The Garage Workshop and Sublevel Network
Rick's garage stands out as the most iconic room in the entire residence, functioning as his primary laboratory and workspace. It features a large U-shaped workbench covered in high-tech gadgets, alien artifacts, and subtle references like the famous box marked time travel stuff. Beneath the garage floor lies a vast underground complex with over twenty sublevels containing alien containment pods, clone chambers, and secret defense systems.
Bedrooms and Personal Quarters
The upstairs floor houses individual bedrooms for Beth, Jerry, Summer, Morty, and Rick. Morty's room represents typical teenage clutter, while Rick's room is surprisingly spartan, featuring a simple cot and walls covered in scientific schematics. This minimalistic bedroom design reflects Rick's detached nature, as he spends most of his time working in the garage rather than resting.
Driveway Cracks and Exterior Anomalies
The exterior of the house carries permanent physical marks resulting from interdimensional travel and alien encounters. A prominent example is the circular crack in the driveway, which remained after the entire house was teleported away during a wild season finale. In the backyard, grave plots and hidden escape routes further showcase how the property has adapted to the family's bizarre lifestyle.
